Memorial Day Airborne Association Meeting

North Georgia Airborne Association Meeting

Memorial Day May 30th 2016

Cleveland Georgia

It was a bright and sunny day, and a crowd of approximately 300 residences gathered in Freedom Park to Honor those from White County who died serving their country.

A prayer was given, the pledge was recited, and the National Anthem was played. Then White County commissioner Terry Goodger addressed the crowd. “We are here to dedicate this new site for the recently relocated service monuments honoring our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard Veterans “Secondly, we are here to recognize our veterans from White County who have died in the past year.”

“Third, we are here to dedicate a new monument for those from White County who died in service to our country,” and the dedication of the new war memorial with the 34 names engraved on the granite monument proved to be the most moving moment of the morning. Each man is listed under the war they fought in: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and Iraq War. As each name was called out, the honor bell was rung to announce the depth of sorrow and the extent of loss by the person who gave their life.

The program also included the reading of the names of White County Veterans who have died during the past year and ringing of the bell by Tom Chastain and the firing of a 21 gun salute.

Attending were Don Sandefur and Randal Dockery, members of the North Georgia Airborne Assoc. We Mingled with the crowd and talked to some old friends and some new. We’re always passing out cards and looking for new paratroopers.

Ending the ceremony was playing of taps by White County Honor Guard member Eddie Allen.

Memorial Day ceremony, held at Chicopee Methodist Church with Gary Weller giving the sermon on the history of Arlington National Cemetery. Viewed PBS that evening and saw our service was almost a duplicate of the program in Washington.
